The Ronkonkoma Fire Department was activated for a residential structure fire with multiple calls to 911 at 1324 HRS. Enroute to the scene, 1st Assistant Chief Kevin Murray notified dispatch of a heavy smoke condition on the block and upon arrival reactivated a working structure fire. As crews arrived from multiple departments, it quickly became evident that this wind-driven fire would challenge the firefighters who quickly began to undertake the grueling task of extinguishment. Under the direction of Chief Murray, firefighters worked extensively to control the blaze and once majority of the fire was knocked down, overhaul operations were underway. The fire was deemed under control at 1504 HRS and overhaul operations began. Once overhaul operations ceased, the building was demolished by the town and all crews were released after clean up operations at 1639 HRS. No civilian injuries were reported and one firefighter was transported to the hospital for minor injuries with one firefighter evaluated and released on scene.
