Active Gas Leak

The Ronkonkoma Fire Department was Dispatched to a gas leak on the afternoon of April 18th, 2018. Upon arrival of First Assistant Chief Kevin Murray, he notified dispatch of an active gas leak from a damaged gas line. National Grid was immediately notified and all arriving units were directed in order to effectively close surrounding roads. The first arriving engine established a watercourse and stretched a precautionary handline as well as crews checked surrounding residences. Additional mutual aid departments were alerted to stand-by at the Ronkonkoma Fire Department in order to cover the rest of the community while the extended operations were underway. After approximately 4 hours, at 1706hrs the gas leak was contained and the scene was left in the hands of national grid with assistance from Suffolk County Police for road closures. No injuries were reported and all crews were back in service at 1707hrs.
